Joel Kramer
Director
Joel Kramer is an internationally influential author and speaker, and a consultant to entrepreneurs. He currently lectures on new values for sustainability during these times of great challenge and worldview transition. His consulting involves "big picture" concerns, such as anticipating upsides and downsides of a proposed venture, utilizing persuasion to focus on mutually shared interests and achieve desired ends, and whether the envisioned direction fits a person or corporate agenda and life.
Kramer is the author of The Passionate mind and co-author with Diana Alstad of The Guru Papers: Masks of Authoritarian Power, which shows how authoritarianism has been the glue holding social orders together, and is a social virus that lives in the mind, often hiding in high ideals. Kramer and Alstad also co-authored numerous papers on social issues, such as protecting democracy, the vote, and overpopulation.
Kramer did post-graduate work in philosophy and psychology at the University of Florida, New York University and Columbia. His philosophy training includes the philosophy of science, theories of knowledge, comparative religion, metaphysics, and Eastern thought. He was on the resident faculty at Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California from 1968-70. A renowned adept and innovator of physical and mental yoga, from 1970-82 he taught seminars on yoga, consciousness and spirituality throughout North America, in Europe and Asia. His and Alstad's book-in-progress, Spirituality for Atheists, shows the basic changes in worldviews and values that are a prerequisite for resolving the current ecological and other planetary crises. Kramer believes that the real battle on the planet is for people's minds and the challenge is to create viable pan-cultural values for a world of accelerated change.
